A:
Yes, we serve a large number of Veterinary clients as well as Urologists, Hospital and Independent Laboratories
Q:
I passed a stone at home. Can I send it directly to you?
A: No, stones must be submitted by a Physician, or Clinical
Laboratory. Contact your Physician, Urologist, or Medical Laboratory and ask them to submit your stone to us for analysis.
Q: I have results from a stone I had. Can you tell me how to prevent another stone?
A: We have tremendous experience
in stone analysis, but treatment is your Doctor's specialty. Many factors can contribute to stone formation. Your Doctor will
have to review your medical history and other laboratory results before deciding on a course of treatment that may reduce
your risk of recurrent stone formation.
Q: I have a stone to submit that is in a Formalin solution. Does this ruin
the specimen?
A: No, Formalin will not hurt a stone specimen. It is not needed and presents an unnecessary hazard during
shipment. Any liquid ( Formalin, blood, urine, or water ) should be removed from your specimen container and the stone sent
as dry as possible.
Q: Why do you offer a photograph of the stone?
A: We were the first Lab to offer a photo
of the stone on our report. It is to replace the "gross description" of a stone (written report of size, color,
weight). Also, patients may be reluctant to hand over the "trophy" of their ordeal (the stone). Our stone report
with a nice color photo makes a nice "trophy" and educational document to give the patient on his follow-up visit.
Q: Why use a "specialty lab" like Urolithiasis, when some large labs do every test we require?
A:
Stone analysis is a low volume test for even large national laboratories. The experience, equipment and personnel will never
be optimum in this situation. At the Urolithiasis Lab our Creator/Director is a Urologist with a life long focus on all aspects
of Stone Disease. Our technical people are all Certified Medical Technologists working all day, every day on Crystallographic
Stone Analysis. We never have a "trainee, fill in tech, or weekend crew" working on your specimen. Our "rookie"
has been here for more than 2 years, and the "old man" for more than 30 years. We recruit, hire, train and retain
the best of Medical Technologists.
